Weaving/Weben

Finally it was time to weave, but during all the excitement I totally forgot to take a photo!!  So here are some shots of the second piece which is twill.
Last Autumn I did a little weaving at an exhibition, but the loom was already dressed and I was allowed to weave a small pattern sequence.
An idea is beginning to form in my mind as to what I would like to weave after the course.

iPhone

What do you think about these gadgets?  Nice, trendy, cool, but who needs it?
A friend, also technically enthusiastic, demonstrated his iPhone last year and it was nice, trendy, cool, fits nicely in the palm of your hand, but who needs it?
Jahren.  So.

Hubby and I shared the same opinion.  Super gadget if you travel a lot, are never at home, have no access to a computer, but in the end it is just a toy!  We don't need it, we don't want it and our wooden mobiles from last century work well enough.  There.
In the Autumn Hubby announces that after long deliberations he's going to buy one.  Needless to say I was indignant, what a traitor, so...yes!
Gesagt, getan!

Ok, iphone arrives, Hubby disappears for the rest of the day.  All I heard were oohs and ahs and he had this other worldly expression on his face.  Clearly lost the plot!
Then he showed me his new wonder machine and I said how nice, yes, yes and so it went on for some days and I was allowed to have a go too.  The apps are amazing, the Angry Birds engaging, and then I discovered all the apps for knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning.  All the stuff I do.  And I was allowed to download these woolly apps on his iPhone.
Ach, was 'ne Freude!

You can imagine what happened next.  Every time Hubby looked for his iPhone I had it in my hand and said: Hang on, I just have to ....
Last week there was a knock on the door and Mr UPS stood there with a parcel for me.  Slightly confused I signed and Hubby was grinning from ear to ear.  Then the penny dropped!
MY own iPhone 4S with my personal butler, I call him Cyril, who talks to me so politely!  Oh, what fun!

And it's nice, trendy, cool, fits nicely in the palm of MY hand and I NEED it!!

Dressing the Loom

The second weaving lesson proved just as much fun as the first.
Having got the warp ready to put on the loom I could not really imagine how all those threads could possibly get onto the loom!
Having already attached the cross the week before the threads were pulled through the reed (the thing that looks like an egg slicer).  My sample has only 72 threads, but it's not a fast business!
Next the yarn has to pass through the heddles, which are the long needle looking things with eyes in the middle.
Once all that is done the warp ends have to be secured onto the warp beam.
And when I came up for air after all that two hours had passed!  I have no idea how!!
At this point it was time for a break and just as we sat down two visitors arrived to help along with proceedings.
One was another student who was doing tapestry weaving and the other was a very experienced weaver full of helpful hints and lovely distractions.  We had such a laugh!
After all that I totally forgot to take a picture of my final small weaving sample!!
Next week...

Long awaited

Today was my first weaving lesson, or at least that's what I thought.  I had absolutely no idea just how much preparation is needed to actually start weaving.  It's a black art!
It's also a decision making process.  The very first thing we had to decide was which type of biscuit to have with the tea!  That was easy - Ginger.  Then there was the question of the colour of the yarn to use and there were so many yummy colours..., but got there too.
After that, surely, it must be on to weaving.  No?  No, now comes the pattern.  What do you want the weaving to look like?  This was pretty tricky because I hadn't a clue what it could look like.  Luckily, Marjorie, the teacher, helped out with that.
After that came wrapping the warp (at least I think it did as I'm not too good with the technical terms yet!) which seemed simple enough, except there's nothing simple about that either, especially if the pegs fall out just as you're nearly finished with it and have to start again.  Second time round it was perfect and it could be tied up and now I have to wait for next week's lesson to put it all on the loom!
Surely then, surely, it must be time to weave??!
It was a lot of fun and the teacher is absolutely brilliant so I am looking forward to the next session.

Man muss viele Entscheidungen treffen.
Angus helped too!!  Isn't he cute?

Welcome

Duzler Post

Also schnell geschnippelt und ausgepackt.
Some time ago I won something here, and today I found a parcel on the mat.  On the outside was a Duzler riding on his horse.  I quickly opened it and see for yourself what I found inside.
A framed picture for 2012 with the sheets for the calender.  And the Duzlers running in a race is an original - just for me.  What a lovely surprise - thank you!
