Narri Narro, Miau, Rhabarber Ahoi

It is the season when anything goes again.  Villingen is a stronghold of carnival which has been celebrated there for centuries.  'Fasnet' is a historic spectacle with traditional costumes, colourful outfits and since it is in the Black Forest there are of course lots of witches too!
There are three main guilds and lots of smaller ones.  The oldest is called Narrozunft and has traditional costumes for the women and imposing male figures.  Also very popular is the Katzenmusik and then there are the Glonkis in their blue-white nightshirts.
The traditional costumes of the Alt Villingerin (younger women) and the Morbili (old women) are all handmade.  The head dress of the Alt Villingerin (like I'm wearing in the photo) are crocheted with gold thread.  Modern ones are often sewn from braid which is of course much cheaper and quicker.  The masks of the Narrozunft are all hand carved and the waiting list is several years long as there are not that many woodcarvers these days.
