Schlange stehen/Queueing

Schlange stehen ist eine perfektionierte Kunstform in England!

Mein erstes Erlebnis war an einer Bushaltestelle in London in Regent Street.  Nach guter deutscher Manier habe ich mich am Randstein hingestellt und mich gewundert wieso da sooo viele Leute in Reih' und Glied hintereinander stehen und mich nicht gerade freundlich ansehen.  Bis eine Dame mich darauf hinwies, dass es eine WARTEschlange gäbe und ich müsse mich HINTEN brav anstellen und warten bis ich dran bin.  Auch dann wenn der Bus voll ist und ohne mich wegfährt.  Mit ausgefahrenen Ellbogen war da gar nichts drin!

Hier wird für alles Schlange gestanden.  An der Kasse, im Pub, beim Tanken, im Postamt, im Flughafen, überall.  Weihnachten gab's im Postamt eine Schlange von über 30 Personen, aber alle haben sich artig hinten hingestellt und gewartet - ausser mir natürlich, ich bin heim!  Es werden sogar Markierungen angebracht denen man folgen muss, wenn Platzmangel ist, so dass kein Chaos entsteht.  Mich fasziniert die Mentalitat der Menschen die das akzeptieren und die Geduld, aber auch der Grund für das Anstehen.  Generell fehlen einfach immer die Angestellten.  Egal wo, wenn 5 Kassen da sind werden nur 2 belegt und beschweren tun sich die Wenigsten und warten und warten und warten ...

Queueing is a perfected artform in England!

My first experience of it was at a bus stop in Regent Street in London.  According to good German behaviour I stood by the curb and wondered why soooo many people stood one after another in a line and looked at me in quite an unfriendly fashion.  Until one lady told me that there was a queue and that I needed to go to the end of the queue and wait my turn.  Even if the bus is full before I got there.  Sticking your elbows out would produce no result whatsoever!

Here they queue for everything.  At the checkout, the pub, at the petrol station, post office, airport, everywhere.  At Christmas there were over 30 people queueing at the post office, but they all lined up and waited - except for me, I went home!  They even mark out areas for orderly queueing so as not to cause chaos.

I am fascinated by the mentality of the people who accept this and the patience required, but also the reason for it.  Mostly it's because staffing levels are inadequate.  When there are 5 tills available only 2 will be manned and most people don't complain and wait and wait and wait ...
