2012

This was an eventful year filled with lots of fibre related fun, more travel than usual, revisiting old memories and making new ones.  It sped by faster than ever! 

I want to thank all my readers for joining me on this journey.  I have made wonderful friends all over the world.

Dieses Jahr hatte ich viel Spass mit Wolligem, bin mehr gereist als normal, habe alte Erinnerungen wieder erweckt und neue gemacht.  Es verging wie im Flug!

Ich möchte mich bei meinen Lesern bedanken, dass sie mit mir diese Reise gemacht haben.  Ich habe wunderbare Freunde überall in der Welt gefunden.

Jinxed oder einfach nur zum Heulen?

Felting isn't really quite my thing it seems.  I have had various attempts now.  I knitted a lovely bag that turned to disaster as the whole thing felted on itself.  That was Austermann wool.  I had another go with a kit from the UK and had a great result.

Filzen scheint nun wirklich nicht mein Ding zu sein.  Ich habe es verschiedentlich probiert.  Ich habe eine schoene Tasche gestrickt und das ganze Ding hat sich in sich selbst verfilzt.  Das war Wolle von Austermann.  Dann habe ich es nochmal probiert mit einem Kit von England und das war super.

Having just done some wet felted slippers which were soso I thought I'd have another go at the knitted variety, but this time using the UK wool for the heel end and the Austermann for the toe end.  Well!!  See for yourself...!!!!!  Back end fine, front disaster.

Nachdem ich neulich bei einem Workshop zum Nassfilzen war und die Hausschuhe soso waren habe ich nochmal die gestrickte Methode probiert, aber fuer die Ferse mit der UK Wolle und die Spitze wieder Austermann.  Ja, hallo!  Seht selbst....!!!  Ferse gut, Zehen Katastrophe.

 

Twit Twoo

When I went to the market the other day I saw a stall I had not seen before and quite a few people seemed to gather there.  When I got closer I could see what the attraction was.

Als ich neulich auf dem Markt war sah ich einen Stand den ich noch nie gesehen hatte und eine ganze Menge Leute standen dort.  Bei genauerem Hinschauen sah ich die Attraktion.

The most beautiful owls where just sitting there totally calm and one could go up to them and stroke them.  Every once in a while they would close one eye and according to their keeper that is how they sleep.  One eye shut and the other one roaming around still taking in any movements.

Wunderschöne  Eulen sassen da ganz ruhig und man konnte sie streicheln.  Von Zeit zu Zeit haben sie ein Auge zugedrückt und der Halter hat erklärt, dass sie so schlafen.  Ein Auge zu und mit dem Anderen spähen  sie umher und beobachten was läuft. 

Patience is a virtue

Early April I put on a warp at the weaving studio to weave a rug.  Having started weaving in January I had little idea of what was actually involved in such a big project.  I bought the wool in Germany after careful calculations and they duly shipped it all.
I was mightily surprised when it took me nearly four sessions to actually warp up the loom, especially since I thought the rug would all be done by July!!

Anfang April habe ich eine Kette für einen Teppich auf einen Webstuhl im Studio aufgezogen.  Nachdem ich erst im Januar zu weben anfing hatte ich keine Ahnung was da auf mich zukam mit so einem grossen Projekt.  Ich habe die Wolle in Deutschland gekauft nach vorsichtiger Kalkulation und sie wurde direkt verschickt.
Ich war total ueberrascht, dass ich vier Wochen brauchte um ueberhaupt mal die Kette auf den Webstuhl zu kriegen, wo ich doch dachte, dass es bis Juli fertig ist!!

Week after week I persevered and bit by bit the rug grew and finally, two weeks ago, it was finished.  After all that time it seemed quite surreal that the moment had come.

Woche für Woche habe ich daran gearbeitet und der Teppich wuchs und dann, vor zwei Wochen, war er fertig.  Nach all der Zeit konnte ich es kaum glauben, dass der Moment da war.

And now nobody is allowed to walk on it.....!!!

Und jetzt darf keiner drauf laufen.....!!!

 

Playing with Beads

Having seen some lovely beadwork at Open Studio in June I decided to learn the basics.  It does require a tremendous amount of patience which is not my strong point!

Nachdem ich im Juni bei Open Studio schöne Perlsachen sah wollte ich auch lernen wie das geht.  Es  benötigt sehr viel Geduld was ich nicht so habe!

This sort of thing is a lot quicker!

Ribbon Loop

Dieser Wolle konnte ich einfach nicht widerstehen als ich sie im Laden entdeckt habe.  Superweich und flauschig mit Mohair.  So ein duftiges Bändchengarn habe ich noch nie gesehen.

Ich habe es mit Nadelstärke 10 gestrickt - nicht mein Favorit, mag's lieber kleiner! - aber es war in kürzester Zeit fertig und ist herrlich warm.

I could not resist this wool when I spotted it in the shop.  Super soft and squidgy with a fair bit of mohair.  I have never seen such a light ribbon yarn.

I used needle size 10 - which is not my favourite, I prefer finer! - but it was done in no time and it is beautifully warm.

Hand dyed, spun and woven

Some months ago I attended a dyeing workshop and some of the wool I used was hand spun.  I decided to use mainly this yarn as a warp and I had enough to make two different scarves.  The weft is Bouclé yarn for the first scarf and I inserted knitting needles randomly for wider spacing to show off the texture of the yarn. 

Vor ein paar Monaten war ich bei einem Färbe Workshop und habe zum Teil handgesponnene Wolle gefärbt.  Ich habe hauptsächlich dieses Garn für die Kette verwendet und hatte genug Material für zwei Schals.  Für den Schuss nahm ich Bouclégarn für den ersten Schal und habe Stricknadeln mit eingewoben damit die Abstände größer waren und das Garn besser zur Geltung kam.

For the second scarf I used pale grey with purple slubs and again I used spacers, but this time only where the slubs would show.

Für den zweiten Schal habe ich helles grau mit lila ungesponnener Faser genommen und auch wieder  Nadeln eingewoben um die Faser zu zeigen.

Amazing how different they are!   Der Unterschied ist erstaunlich!

 

Sessa revisited

Sessa is a tiny  village which lies between Ponte Tresa (Lago di Lugano) and Luino (Lago Maggiore) in a beautiful upland valley in the southernmost part of Switzerland, about 2 minutes walk to the border with Italy.  It has all the sophistication of being Swiss, yet all the charm of being Italian.  Their local language is Ticinese, linked to Romansch, the fourth language of Switzerland.

Sessa ist ein kleines Dorf zwischen Ponte Tresa (Luganer See) und Luino (Lago Maggiore) und liegt in einem Hochtal am südlichsten Zipfel der Schweiz, 2 Gehminuten nach Italien.  Es hat die Feinheiten der Schweiz und all den Charme von Italien.  Es wird Ticinese gesprochen, stark verbunden mit Romansch, der vierten Sprache der Schweiz.

I have known Ticino for most of my life and my experiences in that part of the world have played the most significant role in my personal life journey.  Without it I would not be the person I am today.  So this is a very special place for me.

Ich kenne das Tessin fast mein ganzes Leben und meine Erfahrungen dort haben meinen persönlichen Werdegang sehr geprägt.  Ohne sie wäre ich heute nicht die Person die ich bin.  Somit hat es für mich eine ganz besondere Bedeutung.

 

Escaping the grey

After waiting all Summer for a Summer which didn't materialise we finally decided that we needed to see some blue sky and headed off to the Italian part of Switzerland - Ticino.  This was our first flight from London City Airport and it was very hassle free, but getting there by Tube was very laborious.  We had tremendous views though flying out that way.

Nachdem wir schon den ganzen Sommer auf den Sommer gewartet haben entschieden wir uns die Sonne zu suchen und sind in's Tessin geflogen.  Wir sind zum ersten Mal vom London City Flughafen gestartet und es ist alles stressfrei dort, aber wir mussten mit der U-Bahn fahren was sehr langwierig war, aber wir hatten tolle Eindrücke beim Wegflug.

First stop was a night with my mother in the Black Forest and then on down to the lake (Constance) where we had a light breakfast!!!  Then on towards San Bernardino and the sun is already shining.

Erster Halt war bei meiner Mutter im Schwarzwald und dann weiter zum Bodensee wo wir ein kleines Frühstück  hatten!!!  Dann weiter Richtung San Bernardino und die Sonne scheint schon.

New wheel/Neues Rad

Yesterday my new wheel arrived.  No, it's not what you think!  

A couple of weeks ago I had my spinning wheel out in the garden and as I idly looked at it my heart sank.  There was the biggest split in the wood on the handle part.  There was no way that could be fixed.  I rang my supplier and they agreed that they would have to replace it and yesterday they brought the new one.  I actually think that the grain on this wheel is even more pleasing and it works beautifully.

Gestern kam mein neues Rad an.  Nein, nicht was ihr denkt!

Vor zwei Wochen hatte ich mein Spinnrad im Garten und als ich es mir so anschaute blieb mein Herz stehen.  Da war doch tatsächlich ein riesiger Spalt im Holz am Griffteil.  Mit kleben war da nix.  Ich habe mich mit dem Händler in Verbindung gesetzt und sie meinten es müsse ersetzt werden und gestern haben sie es gebracht.  Mir gefällt es sogar noch besser wie das Erste und es schnurrt prima.

Couldn't wait to try it and did some plying.

Ich musste es sofort ausprobieren und habe gleich ein Garn verzwirnt. 

Muster/Pattern

Ich habe ein fast fertiges Top vererbt bekommen und möchte es so gerne fertig stricken, aber ich hab' keine Ahnung was das für ein Muster ist.  Kennt ihr das vielleicht?

I have inherited this almost finished top and would really like to finish it, but I have no idea what the pattern is.  Does anyone recognise it?

Loop

Mein erstes Werk mit handgesponnener Wolle liegt nun schon eine Weile fast fertig rum, aber ich habe nach passenden Knöpfen gesucht und endlich welche gefunden.  Farbige Perlmuttknöpfe.

My first project using my own hand spun wool has been almost finished for ages, but I have been looking for suitable buttons and finally found some.  Coloured Mother of Pearl.

Die gesponnene Wolle hab' ich schon mal hier gezeigt.  Es waren drei Farben Corriedale, die ich kardiert habe.

The spun yarn I have shown here before.  It was three shades of Corriedale which I carded.

 

Mud, mud, glorious mud!

Last weekend saw us trooping off to the Bedford area in teeming rain to visit Fibre East.  Yes, you've guessed right - a woolly event!  Had it been Summer the setting would have been idyllic.  Big white tents and marquees atop a lovely green field in an open landscape and sheep grazing in the distance.  However, all these warm thoughts vanished as we squelched through the grass with the water rising to our ankles.  Once through the entrance the water gave way to mud.  I don't think I've ever seen so much mud, but then I've never been to Glastonbury!!

Letztes Wochenende sind wir bei strömendem Regen gen Bedford losgezogen zu Fibre East.  Ja, richtig erraten - ein Woll Event!  Wäre es Sommer gewesen wäre die Lage idyllisch gewesen.  Große weisse Zelte inmitten eines grünen Feldes in herrlicher Landschaft und Schafe in der Ferne.  Leider sind diese warmen Gedanken schnell verflogen als wir in's nasse Grass getreten sind und das Wasser bis zu den Knöcheln hoch stieg.  Nach dem Eingangszelt wurde aus dem Wasser Matsch.  Ich habe noch nie so viel Matsch gesehen, aber ich war ja auch noch nie in Glastonbury!

None of this deterred the woolly people and there were a lot of visitors at the event, but the conditions were terrible and I felt very sorry for the stall holders who had to worry about their goods getting dropped in dirty water.  It didn't take long though to forget the mud and concentrate on all the lovely colours and textures.  Everything connected with wool and fibres was there.  A serious case of the wanties set in, but I was quite restrained.  Well, sort of!  

Aber die wolligen Leute liess das nicht aufhalten und es hatte jede Menge Besucher dort, aber mir taten die Händler leid, die sich sorgten, dass ihre Ware in das matschige Wasser fällt.  Es ging nicht lange bis man den Matsch vergessen hatte und sich auf Farben und Strukturen konzentrierte.  Alles was mit Wolle und Fasern zu tun hatte war vertreten.  Ein schlimmes Gefühl von Muss Haben setzte ein, aber ich habe mich eigentlich zurück gehalten.  Na ja, so etwa!

I only bought some silk for spinning in glorious colours and a tiny bit of Merino and some buttons.  Oh yes, and of course the little bit of equipment my husband bought for me - a drum carder!!  So far all I have done is to stroke it and look at it lovingly...

Ich habe nur etwas Seide in herrlichen Farben zum Spinnen gekauft, ein klein wenig Merino und Knöpfe.  Ach ja, und natürlich das bisschen Gerät das mein Mann mir kaufte - einen Kardierer!!  Bis jetzt habe ich ihn nur gestreichelt und bewundert... den Kardierer natürlich!

In one of the tents Woolsack was represented and the first thing I saw was the cushion I wove for the olympic athletes.  Another couple of cushions from other Guild member were there too.

In einem der Zelte war die Woolsack Organisation and das Erste was ich sah war das Kissen, das ich für die olympischen Athleten gewoben habe.  Dann habe ich noch 2 entdeckt von anderen Gildemitgliedern.

It was a very interesting event indeed and I'm hoping that next year the sun will shine!

Es war ein interessanter Event und ich hoffe, dass nächstes Jahr die Sonne scheint!
