Last weekend saw us trooping off to the Bedford area in teeming rain to visit Fibre East. Yes, you've guessed right - a woolly event! Had it been Summer the setting would have been idyllic. Big white tents and marquees atop a lovely green field in an open landscape and sheep grazing in the distance. However, all these warm thoughts vanished as we squelched through the grass with the water rising to our ankles. Once through the entrance the water gave way to mud. I don't think I've ever seen so much mud, but then I've never been to Glastonbury!!
Letztes Wochenende sind wir bei strömendem Regen gen Bedford losgezogen zu Fibre East. Ja, richtig erraten - ein Woll Event! Wäre es Sommer gewesen wäre die Lage idyllisch gewesen. Große weisse Zelte inmitten eines grünen Feldes in herrlicher Landschaft und Schafe in der Ferne. Leider sind diese warmen Gedanken schnell verflogen als wir in's nasse Grass getreten sind und das Wasser bis zu den Knöcheln hoch stieg. Nach dem Eingangszelt wurde aus dem Wasser Matsch. Ich habe noch nie so viel Matsch gesehen, aber ich war ja auch noch nie in Glastonbury!
None of this deterred the woolly people and there were a lot of visitors at the event, but the conditions were terrible and I felt very sorry for the stall holders who had to worry about their goods getting dropped in dirty water. It didn't take long though to forget the mud and concentrate on all the lovely colours and textures. Everything connected with wool and fibres was there. A serious case of the wanties set in, but I was quite restrained. Well, sort of!
Aber die wolligen Leute liess das nicht aufhalten und es hatte jede Menge Besucher dort, aber mir taten die Händler leid, die sich sorgten, dass ihre Ware in das matschige Wasser fällt. Es ging nicht lange bis man den Matsch vergessen hatte und sich auf Farben und Strukturen konzentrierte. Alles was mit Wolle und Fasern zu tun hatte war vertreten. Ein schlimmes Gefühl von Muss Haben setzte ein, aber ich habe mich eigentlich zurück gehalten. Na ja, so etwa!
I only bought some silk for spinning in glorious colours and a tiny bit of Merino and some buttons. Oh yes, and of course the little bit of equipment my husband bought for me - a drum carder!! So far all I have done is to stroke it and look at it lovingly...
Ich habe nur etwas Seide in herrlichen Farben zum Spinnen gekauft, ein klein wenig Merino und Knöpfe. Ach ja, und natürlich das bisschen Gerät das mein Mann mir kaufte - einen Kardierer!! Bis jetzt habe ich ihn nur gestreichelt und bewundert... den Kardierer natürlich!
In one of the tents Woolsack was represented and the first thing I saw was the cushion I wove for the olympic athletes. Another couple of cushions from other Guild member were there too.
In einem der Zelte war die Woolsack Organisation and das Erste was ich sah war das Kissen, das ich für die olympischen Athleten gewoben habe. Dann habe ich noch 2 entdeckt von anderen Gildemitgliedern.
It was a very interesting event indeed and I'm hoping that next year the sun will shine!
Es war ein interessanter Event und ich hoffe, dass nächstes Jahr die Sonne scheint!
