Cables - Zopf

The longest time I had wanted to do some cables and last year I bought this lovely Lana Grossa wool in my favourite yarn shop in the Black Forest and decided to make a short jumper.

Lange schon will ich mal wieder Zopfmuster stricken und letztes Jahr kaufte ich schoene Lana Grossa Wolle in meinem Lieblingsgeschäft und habe jetzt einen kurzen Pulli gestrickt.

Having worn it now a few times I can report that it is really cosy and soft and wonderfully warm.  This time I made a different type of neck which turned out very well and I find much more comfortable than a normal V.  Since I liked it so much another lot of Lana Grossa found its way into my luggage on my last trip!!

Nachdem ich ihn jetzt ein paarmal getragen habe kann ich sagen, dass er herrlich weich und wunderbar warm ist.  Diesmal habe ich einen etwas anderen Ausschnitt gemacht, der sehr gut rauskam und angenehmer ist wie herkoemmliche V-Ausschnitte.   Da mir das so imponierte befand sich eine weitere Lana Grossa Menge in meinem Gepäck beim letzten Trip!!

Rug Wool

Beim letzten Besuch im Schwarzwald hatte ich einen Besuch bei Traub Wolle eingeplant.  Da ich ja jetzt den Webkurs beendet habe und beschloss ich einen Teppich zu weben.  Ich dachte ich fange mal klein an mit 1.70m auf 1.20m!!!

On my last trip to the Black Forest I planned a visit to the wool factory of Traub.  Now that the weaving course is finished I decided to weave a rug.  I thought I'd start small with 1.70m by 1.20m!!

Das war nicht ganz so schlimm wie bei Opal letztes Jahr, aber die Versuchung ist enorm.  Ich war relativ diszipliniert und habe (fast) nur gekauft was auf der Liste stand.  Riesensortiment und sehr gute Preise, besonders die der eigenen Traubwolle.  Es gab natürlich auch Webstühle, Spinnräder und sämtliches Zubehör.

This was not as bad as Opal last year, but the temptation is enormous.  I was relatively disciplined and bought (almost) only what was on my list.  Huge assortment and very good prices, especially for their own Traubwool.  They also have looms, spinning wheels and all accessories.

Meine Vorstellung war, dass ich die ca 9kg Wolle im Koffer verstaue, was natürlich totaler Blödsinn war. Das Gewicht hätte schon gepasst, aber das Volumen hatte ich mir nicht ganz so vorgestellt!!  Sie haben dann alles geschippert, für weniger wie ein Gepäckstück bei Easyjet, und es war innerhalb von 3 Tagen hier.

My idea was that I would pack the 9kg of wool in my suitcase, which was total nonsense of course.  The weight would have been fine, but I hadn't visualised the volume!!  So they shipped it all, for less than the luggage at Easyjet would have cost, and it arrived within 3 days.

Da war ich mit Sicherheit auch nicht zum letzten Mal!

This was definitely not my last visit there!  And I know that there are certain people who will laugh at my growing non-stash!!

 

Gesponnen!/Spun!

 Fast täglich sitze ich ein bißchen am Spinnrad, aber die Resultate lassen noch etwas zu wünschen übrig!

Mal ist das Spinnen schön, dann wieder etwas holperig, um nicht zu sagen dick.  Andere Stellen viiiel zu dünn.  Oh je, oh je....  wird noch werden .... hoffentlich!

Bei diesem Garn könnte ich mal in Erwägung ziehen die Stricknadeln dran zu lassen -  werde berichten.

 Almost every day a sit at the spinning wheel for a time, but the results still leave much to be desired!

Sometimes the spinning is quite even, then less so, or rather too thick.  Other parts are way too thin.  Oh dear, oh dear ... it'll get there ... I hope!

 With this yarn I might consider letting the knitting needles go near it - I will report.

Opal Factory Shop

 Die Opal Fabrik ist in Hechingen auf der Schwäbischen Alb.  Landschaftlich einfach herrlich gelegen.

Am Rande der Stadt ist die Burg Hohenzollern, Heimat des preussischen Adels.

Sie liegt hoch auf dem Berg, genau wie in den Märchenbüchern beschrieben.

  Das Fabrikgebäude sieht sehr klein und unscheinbar aus.  Zuerst dachte ich ich bin am falschen Platz.

Ich hatte früher viel mit den Tricotagenfabriken auf der Alb zu tun und kannte daher auch deren Fabrikverkauf.  Meist waren es Riesenlager, die so ein bißchen auf Laden umgestellt wurden.  So hatte ich es auch da erwartet, aber als ich den Laden betrat konnte ich es kaum glauben.

 Farben, Farben und noch mehr Farben!  Die Farbexplosion ist überwältigend.  Man kann das gar nicht so richtig wiedergeben mit den Fotos.  Es war alles wunderschön dekoriert und ich habe noch nirgends einen solchen tollen Wolleladen gesehen.

 Es gibt außer Wolle auch Anleitungen und fertige Teile zu kaufen und natürlich alles Zubehör.

Da ich noch nie mit Opalwolle gestrickt habe und bei diesem Riesenangebot total verunsichert wurde habe ich mich nur langsam vorgetastet und nicht sehr viel gekauft.  Ich habe 400g Socken(baum)wolle gekauft, fuer Socken und Baktus.  500g handgefärbte Wolle aus der ich eine längere Jacke stricken möchte.  Hat jemand eine Idee für ein Muster?
Schon lange wollte ich auch mal Filzen ausprobieren und habe noch 150g Filzwolle mitgenommen.  Das Ganze kostete knapp 50 Euro.

 The Opal factory is in a town called Hechingen.  The landscape in that area is quite beautiful.

 On the edge of the town is a castle called Burg Hohenzollern which is the home of the Prussian nobility.  The castle sits atop a hill surveying the countryside and it looks just like one would imagine from descriptions of fairy tales.

The factory building looks very unassuming and I wondered if I had come to the wrong place.

I used to have a lot of dealings with fabric producers in that neighbourhood and had also come across their factory shops.  They were basically warehouses which had some tills and counters to make it look more like a shop.  So, I expected something similar here, but was totally amazed when I saw the shop.

Colour, colour and more colour!  It was overwhelming.  The photos don't do it justice.  The whole place was beautifully decorated and I have never seen such a wonderful wool shop anywhere.

Apart from the wool they sell in-house magazines with patterns, all the accessories and some ready knitted socks and garments.

I have never knitted with Opal wool and was a bit fazed by all the stuff on offer and decided to take it slowly the first time, knowing for sure that I will go back there.

I bought 400g of a cotton sock wool for both socks and a baktus.  500g of hand dyed skeins for a longer cardigan/jacket.  Anyone got any ideas for a pattern?

I also wanted to try out felting and bought 150g for that.

All that cost just under 50 Euro.

Alpaca

Diese schönen Alpacas wohnen hier ganz in der Nähe.  Natürlich musste ich auch gleich Wolle kaufen für ein duftiges Dreiecktuch.

These lovely alpacas live not far from me and there's also a little shop there where  I bought some wool  to make a lacy shawl.
