Gesponnen!/Spun!

 Fast täglich sitze ich ein bißchen am Spinnrad, aber die Resultate lassen noch etwas zu wünschen übrig!

Mal ist das Spinnen schön, dann wieder etwas holperig, um nicht zu sagen dick.  Andere Stellen viiiel zu dünn.  Oh je, oh je....  wird noch werden .... hoffentlich!

Bei diesem Garn könnte ich mal in Erwägung ziehen die Stricknadeln dran zu lassen -  werde berichten.

 Almost every day a sit at the spinning wheel for a time, but the results still leave much to be desired!

Sometimes the spinning is quite even, then less so, or rather too thick.  Other parts are way too thin.  Oh dear, oh dear ... it'll get there ... I hope!

 With this yarn I might consider letting the knitting needles go near it - I will report.

Geschichte/History

Heute war ein Treffen von der Spinn- und Webgilde und das Thema war Spinnen im 17. Jahrhundert.  Was mich besonders interessierte war die Sozialgeschichte von der Zeit.  Die Dame, die den Vortrag gab, gehört einer Gruppe von Reenactors an die Kämpfe nachstellen und ganze Dörfer aufbauen wo das Leben von damals gezeigt wird.

Today we had a meeting of the Spinners and Weavers Guild and the subject was Spinning in the 17th century.  What interested me particularly was the social history of that time.  The lady who gave the talk belongs to a group of re-enactors of old battles and they also rebuild complete villages to show the life of that time.

Wir haben auch immer einen Verkaufstisch und da Weihnachten schon näher rückt habe ich ein paar Bäumchen zum Aufhängen gebastelt.

 We always have a sales table there and since Christmas is only just around the corner I decided to make some little trees to hang up.

 

Suzie Pro

 Last Friday we went down to Clevedon on the Bristol Channel to collect my Suzie Pro.

Letzte Woche sind wir nach Clevedon am Bristol Channel gefahren um meine Suzie Pro abzuholen.

Sarah and her husband who own the shop called Spinning Weal made us very welcome the minute we stepped through the door.  Sarah, seen here spinning on the Suzie, had already assembled the wheel when we got there and it wasn't long before I was given a fleece and started spinning.  Considering I'm a total beginner I was amazed what a dream it was to spin on this wheel and I was completely in love!  and hooked!

Sarah und ihr Mann sind die Besitzer des Ladens Spinning Weal und begrüßten uns ganz herzlich.  Sarah, hier im Bild an der Suzie, hatte das Rad schon fertig montiert und es dauerte nicht lange bis ich einen Vlies bekam und anfing zu spinnen.  Obwohl ich kompletter Anfänger bin war ich überrascht wie einfach es ging und bin jetzt total verliebt!

As you can see from the photo we also took along my antique wheel because I was told that Sarah was very knowledgeable about old wheels and this was indeed so.  In fact she had so much spinning information and history that I could have listened to her all day.  She established that my old wheel was fully functioning, but designed for spinning flax and proved it by spinning the most beautiful linen yarn.  She made me try, but boy, that really is hard!  Not only are the fibres short and slippery, the treadle is nothing like the modern ones and flax needs a lot of twist.

Wir haben auch mein antikes Rad mitgenommen, da mir gesagt wurde, daß Sarah viel Erfahrung mit alten Rädern hat und das war auch so.  So hatte so viel Wissen und Geschichte über Spinnen, daß ich den ganzen Tag hätte zuhören können.  Sie bestätigte, daß das alte Spinnrad komplett und funktionstüchtig war, aber für Flachsspinnen gedacht.  Sie hat sich gleich Flachs geholt und wie man im Bild weiter oben sieht hat sie perfektes Leinengarn gesponnen.  Dann hat sie mich probieren lassen, das war harte Arbeit.  Flachs ist sehr kurz und rutscht und das Pedal ist nicht wie die Modernen.  Da muß man richtig reintreten, vor allem auch weil Flachs viel Twist braucht.

 This is the result of our time with Sarah.  We enjoyed it so much that we booked up to go onto one of her courses next month.  And that includes my husband!

Das ist das Resultat unsrer Zeit mit Sarah.  Es war so toll, daß wir uns für einen Kurs bei ihr angemeldet haben.  Mein Mann macht mit!

Spinnrad/Spinning Wheel

 In den letzten Tagen hat mein Mann mein Spinnrad komplett überholt.  Am Flyer mussten die Haken erneuert werden, das Rad musste an einer Stelle wieder mit Wachs gefüllt werden, da irgendwann mal der Holzwurm drin war.  Ausserdem hat er das Ganze gesäubert und schön poliert.

Es ist schon mehrere Generationen in meiner Familie.  Es stammt aus der Schweiz, wahrscheinlich St Gallen wo die Familie her kommt, und wurde 1860 hergestellt.  Es hat Elfenbeinverzierungen und Inlay und bis auf drei kleine Kugeln ist alles noch vorhanden.

 In the last few days my husband overhauled my spinning wheel.  The hooks on the flyer needed replacing and the wheel had to be filled with wax in one particular place as the wood worm got into it at some stage.  Then he cleaned it all up and polished it.

It has been in my family for some generations.  It originates in Switzerland, most likely St Gallen as the family comes from there, and was made in 1860.  It has ivory decorations and inlays and apart from three little balls is complete.

Jetzt muß ich nur noch spinnen lernen!  Habe diese Woche angefangen....

All I have to do now is to learn spinning!  I started this week....
