Bertie

Having finished my big rug (ages ago) I still had some warp left on the loom which I did not want to waste and as I had never done any tapestry weaving it seemed an ideal time to try.  The question was what, but a cat seemed an obvious answer.  I am hopeless at drawing, but my husband is very good with cartoons and he drew Bertie for me.

Nachdem ich meinen grossen Teppich fertig gewoben hatte (schon vor einiger Zeit) hatte ich noch Kette auf dem Webstuhl die ich benutzen wollte und da ich noch nie Gobelin Weberei probiert hatte war dies die ideale Gelegenheit.  Die Frage war was und eine Katze schien eine gute Idee zu sein.  Zeichnen ist nicht so mein Ding, aber mein Mann ist sehr gut mit Cartoons und hat Bertie für mich gezeichnet.

Due to some gross miscalculation by the company who supplied my Rya wool for the rug I still had masses left which I used for the background.  The base was assorted wool and for Bertie I hand carded and spun merino wool.

Da die Wollfirma, von der ich die Ryawolle für den Teppich gekauft habe, total fehlkalkuliert hatte hatte ich noch jede Menge übrig was ich für den Hintergrund benutzte.  Der untere Teil war aus verschiedener Wolle und für Bertie habe ich Merinowolle kardiert und gesponnen. 

Converting a paper cartoon into a drawing of wool by weaving was probably not the best choice for a first tapestry project, but I had a lot of fun creating Bertie and am really pleased with it.

Einen Papiercartoon in eine Zeichnung aus gewebter Wolle umzuwandeln war wahrscheinlich nicht die beste Wahl als ein erstes Gobelinprojekt, aber es hat Spass gemacht Bertie in's Leben zu rufen und ich bin sehr zufrieden damit.

Table Runner

A little while ago I bought some lovely cotton yarn for weaving as I had in mind making a small table runner for my mother's birthday.  As I am new to this game I thought I would keep it simple and stuck to a twill which worked out pretty well.  As usual with my weaving it never quite turns out as expected!!

Vor Kurzem kaufte ich Baumwollgarn zum Weben da ich einen Tischläufer fuer meine Mutter zum Geburtstag weben wollte.  Da ich neu im Weben bin habe ich es schlicht gehalten und einfach einen normalen Twill gewebt und bin ganz zufrieden damit.  Wie immer bei meinem Weben kommt es nicht ganz so raus wie erwartet!!

As always the warp takes ages, as does the finishing off, but then the weaving is relatively quick.

Wie immer dauert es ewig bis die Kette fertig ist, und dann das Fertigstellen ist auch nicht das Schnellste, aber das Weben geht doch immer recht flott.

The colours worked quite well and I think my mum liked it.

Die Farben kamen gut raus und ich denke es hat meiner Mutter gefallen.

Under the Desk

Ich hatte noch so viel Wolle übrig und der Stuhl am Schreibtisch stand auf einem uralt Teppich, so dass ich mit der restlichen Kette vom grossen Teppich noch einen Kleinen webte.  Eigentlich war er ohne Fransen geplant, aber irgendwie hatte ich dann auch keine Lust mehr die Kettenenden alle einzunähen!  Jetzt eben mit und mir gefällt es so auch.

I had piles of wool left over and the chair at the desk stood on an ancient carpet so that I used the remaining warp of the big rug and wove a little one.  The plan was without fringe, but somehow having tidied up the back I really didn't feel like sewing in all those warp ends!  Now it's with a fringe and I quite like it like that.

Patience is a virtue

Early April I put on a warp at the weaving studio to weave a rug.  Having started weaving in January I had little idea of what was actually involved in such a big project.  I bought the wool in Germany after careful calculations and they duly shipped it all.
I was mightily surprised when it took me nearly four sessions to actually warp up the loom, especially since I thought the rug would all be done by July!!

Anfang April habe ich eine Kette für einen Teppich auf einen Webstuhl im Studio aufgezogen.  Nachdem ich erst im Januar zu weben anfing hatte ich keine Ahnung was da auf mich zukam mit so einem grossen Projekt.  Ich habe die Wolle in Deutschland gekauft nach vorsichtiger Kalkulation und sie wurde direkt verschickt.
Ich war total ueberrascht, dass ich vier Wochen brauchte um ueberhaupt mal die Kette auf den Webstuhl zu kriegen, wo ich doch dachte, dass es bis Juli fertig ist!!

Week after week I persevered and bit by bit the rug grew and finally, two weeks ago, it was finished.  After all that time it seemed quite surreal that the moment had come.

Woche für Woche habe ich daran gearbeitet und der Teppich wuchs und dann, vor zwei Wochen, war er fertig.  Nach all der Zeit konnte ich es kaum glauben, dass der Moment da war.

And now nobody is allowed to walk on it.....!!!

Und jetzt darf keiner drauf laufen.....!!!

 

Hand dyed, spun and woven

Some months ago I attended a dyeing workshop and some of the wool I used was hand spun.  I decided to use mainly this yarn as a warp and I had enough to make two different scarves.  The weft is Bouclé yarn for the first scarf and I inserted knitting needles randomly for wider spacing to show off the texture of the yarn. 

Vor ein paar Monaten war ich bei einem Färbe Workshop und habe zum Teil handgesponnene Wolle gefärbt.  Ich habe hauptsächlich dieses Garn für die Kette verwendet und hatte genug Material für zwei Schals.  Für den Schuss nahm ich Bouclégarn für den ersten Schal und habe Stricknadeln mit eingewoben damit die Abstände größer waren und das Garn besser zur Geltung kam.

For the second scarf I used pale grey with purple slubs and again I used spacers, but this time only where the slubs would show.

Für den zweiten Schal habe ich helles grau mit lila ungesponnener Faser genommen und auch wieder  Nadeln eingewoben um die Faser zu zeigen.

Amazing how different they are!   Der Unterschied ist erstaunlich!

 

Rug Update

Although I haven't posted any photos lately the rug is growing!  Slow, but steady progress and I really love weaving.

Obwohl ich in letzter Zeit keine Bilder gezeigt habe wächst der Teppich!  Langsam, aber sicher und es macht mir unheimlich viel Spass.

I'm on the third inlay now and they really do take quite a bit of time, but it is beginning to take shape now.

Jetzt bin ich am dritten Inlay und die brauchen recht viel Zeit, aber so langsam sieht man wie's raus kommt.

Jetzt wächst der Teppich so langsam vor sich hin!

 Now the rug is growing slowly and steadily!

Der erste Streifen ist auch schon angefangen.

Rug Warp

Schon eine Weile wurschtle ich jetzt schon an der Kette für meinen Teppich.

I have been sorting out the warp for my rug for some time now.

Heute hoffe ich, dass ich wenigsten mal zum Testweben komme.

Today I hope to at least make a start on the test weave.

Textures

We had a lot of fun playing with textures this time.  I started with some fine bouclé in single rows mixed with linen.  The thick bouclé I did in Tabby and Twill and at the end I wove some unspun fleece in by hand.

Wir hatten viel Spass mit  verschieden Garnen diesmal.  Zuerst mit feinem Bouclé und dünnem Leinen.  Danach dickes Bouclé in Tabby und Köper  und ich habe ungesponne Wolle von Hand eingewebt.

 I also had a go at a finger controlled technique called Brooks Bouquet which has a lovely effect, especially when used with only one colour.

Ich habe auch eine Fingermethode ausprobiert die Brooks Bouquet heisst.  Die kommt sehr schön raus, besonders wenn man nur ein Garn benutzt.

Kleine Muster/Small Samples

So langsam tut sich was beim Weben!  

Nachdem die ersten zwei Basismuster fertig waren wurden sie vom Webstuhl geschnitten und schön versäubert  und geknotet.

After the first two samples were finished they were cut of the loom, tidied up and knotted.

Dann durften wir experimentieren.  Erst mal Farben aussuchen und die Wahl war tatsächlich eine Qual!

 Now it was time for experimenting and the first thing was to choose colours, but what a choice!

Jetzt einfach mal drauf los weben.  Da lernt man schnell was funktioniert und was nicht.

Just having a go teaches you quickly what works and what doesn't.

 Gar nicht so schlecht für den Anfang.

Not a bad start.
