Felting and Hello

Over the last few weeks I seem to have gathered new readers and should have welcomed them long ago to my blog.  So, Welcome, it's always nice to see new faces.

In den letzten Wochen haben sich einige neue Leser dazu gesellt und ich haette sie schon lange willkommen heissen sollen.  Also hiermit, Willkommen, es ist immer schoen neue Gesichter zu sehen.

As you may know knitting followed by felting is not quite my metier!!  Only a little while ago I showed some new disasters, but we needed new slippers and so I decided to give it one last try.  I bought some Feltro yarn last time we were in Germany and started needling.

Wie Ihr wisst ist stricken und dann filzen nicht so ganz mein Metier!  Es ist nicht lange her, dass ich meine letzte Katastrophe vorführte, aber wir brauchten neue Hausschuhe und ich hab's nochmal probiert.  Ich kaufte Feltro Wolle beim letzten Besuch in Deutschland und hab' los genadelt.

And this time they turned out pretty much as I had hoped.  And partner look!

Und dieses Mal sind sie ziemlich so geworden wie ich sie mir vorstellte.  Und im Partnerlook!

STOOL COVER

Neulich sah ich einen Hocker mit gehäkeltem Bezug und dachte sofort an meinen Badhocker der auch schon besser aussah.  Ich hatte noch schöne Baumwolle die ich im Sommer in Luino gekauft habe und die farblich perfekt passte.  Das Badezimmer ist weiss, hellgelb und ein wenig schwarz.  Die Stuhlbeine müssten wohl noch etwas poliert werden!!

The other day I saw a stool with a crochet cover which immediately made me think of my bathroom stool which needed a new cover.  I still had some nice cotton yarn which I bought in Luino this Summer in the perfect colours.  The bathroom is white, pale yellow and a little black.  The legs look like they could do with a bit of polish!!

 

BUILDINGS

Looking around London is always interesting, but this time I was struck by the amount that is being built at the moment.  Especially skywards.  And also the astonishing difference between old and new.

 London ist immer interessant, aber diesmal fiel mir auf wie viel dort im Moment gebaut wird.  Vor allem hoch hinaus.  Und erstaunlich ist der Unterschied zwischen alt und neu.

Surprise Present

The day after Christmas there was a knock on the door and the postman handed me a parcel all the way from Idaho.  I had an idea as to the sort of thing it might have been, but it was way more special than I could have imagined.  Thank you, Judy, for such a wonderful gift.  I'm absolutely thrilled!  And thank Max for modelling!!

Am Tag nach Weihnachten klopfte es an der Tür und der Postbote gab mir ein Päckchen das von Idaho kam.  Ich hatte schon einen Verdacht was da drin sein könnte, aber es war viel toller wie ich es mir vorgestellt hatte.  Vielen Dank, Judy, für  dieses wunderbare Geschenk.  Ich bin ganz begeistert!  Und danke Max, dass er Modell gestanden ist!!

 

2012

This was an eventful year filled with lots of fibre related fun, more travel than usual, revisiting old memories and making new ones.  It sped by faster than ever! 

I want to thank all my readers for joining me on this journey.  I have made wonderful friends all over the world.

Dieses Jahr hatte ich viel Spass mit Wolligem, bin mehr gereist als normal, habe alte Erinnerungen wieder erweckt und neue gemacht.  Es verging wie im Flug!

Ich möchte mich bei meinen Lesern bedanken, dass sie mit mir diese Reise gemacht haben.  Ich habe wunderbare Freunde überall in der Welt gefunden.

Jinxed oder einfach nur zum Heulen?

Felting isn't really quite my thing it seems.  I have had various attempts now.  I knitted a lovely bag that turned to disaster as the whole thing felted on itself.  That was Austermann wool.  I had another go with a kit from the UK and had a great result.

Filzen scheint nun wirklich nicht mein Ding zu sein.  Ich habe es verschiedentlich probiert.  Ich habe eine schoene Tasche gestrickt und das ganze Ding hat sich in sich selbst verfilzt.  Das war Wolle von Austermann.  Dann habe ich es nochmal probiert mit einem Kit von England und das war super.

Having just done some wet felted slippers which were soso I thought I'd have another go at the knitted variety, but this time using the UK wool for the heel end and the Austermann for the toe end.  Well!!  See for yourself...!!!!!  Back end fine, front disaster.

Nachdem ich neulich bei einem Workshop zum Nassfilzen war und die Hausschuhe soso waren habe ich nochmal die gestrickte Methode probiert, aber fuer die Ferse mit der UK Wolle und die Spitze wieder Austermann.  Ja, hallo!  Seht selbst....!!!  Ferse gut, Zehen Katastrophe.

 

Twit Twoo

When I went to the market the other day I saw a stall I had not seen before and quite a few people seemed to gather there.  When I got closer I could see what the attraction was.

Als ich neulich auf dem Markt war sah ich einen Stand den ich noch nie gesehen hatte und eine ganze Menge Leute standen dort.  Bei genauerem Hinschauen sah ich die Attraktion.

The most beautiful owls where just sitting there totally calm and one could go up to them and stroke them.  Every once in a while they would close one eye and according to their keeper that is how they sleep.  One eye shut and the other one roaming around still taking in any movements.

Wunderschöne  Eulen sassen da ganz ruhig und man konnte sie streicheln.  Von Zeit zu Zeit haben sie ein Auge zugedrückt und der Halter hat erklärt, dass sie so schlafen.  Ein Auge zu und mit dem Anderen spähen  sie umher und beobachten was läuft. 

Patience is a virtue

Early April I put on a warp at the weaving studio to weave a rug.  Having started weaving in January I had little idea of what was actually involved in such a big project.  I bought the wool in Germany after careful calculations and they duly shipped it all.
I was mightily surprised when it took me nearly four sessions to actually warp up the loom, especially since I thought the rug would all be done by July!!

Anfang April habe ich eine Kette für einen Teppich auf einen Webstuhl im Studio aufgezogen.  Nachdem ich erst im Januar zu weben anfing hatte ich keine Ahnung was da auf mich zukam mit so einem grossen Projekt.  Ich habe die Wolle in Deutschland gekauft nach vorsichtiger Kalkulation und sie wurde direkt verschickt.
Ich war total ueberrascht, dass ich vier Wochen brauchte um ueberhaupt mal die Kette auf den Webstuhl zu kriegen, wo ich doch dachte, dass es bis Juli fertig ist!!

Week after week I persevered and bit by bit the rug grew and finally, two weeks ago, it was finished.  After all that time it seemed quite surreal that the moment had come.

Woche für Woche habe ich daran gearbeitet und der Teppich wuchs und dann, vor zwei Wochen, war er fertig.  Nach all der Zeit konnte ich es kaum glauben, dass der Moment da war.

And now nobody is allowed to walk on it.....!!!

Und jetzt darf keiner drauf laufen.....!!!

 

Playing with Beads

Having seen some lovely beadwork at Open Studio in June I decided to learn the basics.  It does require a tremendous amount of patience which is not my strong point!

Nachdem ich im Juni bei Open Studio schöne Perlsachen sah wollte ich auch lernen wie das geht.  Es  benötigt sehr viel Geduld was ich nicht so habe!

This sort of thing is a lot quicker!

Ribbon Loop

Dieser Wolle konnte ich einfach nicht widerstehen als ich sie im Laden entdeckt habe.  Superweich und flauschig mit Mohair.  So ein duftiges Bändchengarn habe ich noch nie gesehen.

Ich habe es mit Nadelstärke 10 gestrickt - nicht mein Favorit, mag's lieber kleiner! - aber es war in kürzester Zeit fertig und ist herrlich warm.

I could not resist this wool when I spotted it in the shop.  Super soft and squidgy with a fair bit of mohair.  I have never seen such a light ribbon yarn.

I used needle size 10 - which is not my favourite, I prefer finer! - but it was done in no time and it is beautifully warm.
